9th Week Poll Analysis

(Link to us: http://snipurl.com/v04fo)

(Picture obtained from: http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz220/Brow-Zer/9thWeekPollAnalysis.jpg)

Is it important for us to secure our web browser? Definitely, hands down! 100% of the readers agree that it is important to secure their web browser. This means that none of the readers disagree that it is not important to secure it. A very important question to ask yourself is how secure is your web browser. Multiple web browsers may be installed in your computer. Other software applications in your computer such as email clients or document viewers may used a different browser that you normally use to access the web. For this reason, it is important to securely configure each browser that might be installed on your computer. One advantage to have multiple web browsers is that one browser can be used for sensitive activities only such as online banking and the other can be used for general purpose. This can minimize the chances of vulnerabilities in a web browser, web site or any related software that can be used to compromise sensitive information.

And now, how can you tell if a webpage is secure? Anytime a webpage asks you for sensitve information, you need to be able to identify whether the page is secure or not. It is extremely important as online fraud cases has been increasing substantially year by year. Especially, when girls out there likes to do online shopping. For that reason, with secure browser, it can guide girls to safer online shopping.

There are two (2) general indications of a secure webpage. First, it is to check the webpage URL/address. Normally, the URLs will begins with the letters 'http'. However, over a secure connection, the address should be displayed as 'https'. Notice the change in the URL? The 's' at the end indicated secure which is the page displayed now is safe to be used.

Secondly, check out for the 'lock' icon at somewhere at the bottom of the window in the browser. For instance, if you are using the Internet Explorer, it displays the lock icon in the bottom right of the browser's window. The 'lock' icon is not just a picture! Click on the icon to see details of the site's security. It is important to know because some fraudulent websites are built a bar at bottom of the webpage to intimate the lock icon of your browser. So, what are you waiting for? Check now!

If everything looks good, the website you are running have provided you with a safe means of communicating your sensitive information. An advice for you: Browse Safely!

Thank You! :)

The Development of Microsoft MIX10 Mobile Web Browser

(Link to us: http://snipurl.com/uxn9n)

We’ve come a long way from WML, 160 pixel screens, and numeric keypads. But the mobile Web is still quite different from the desktop.

Desktop are usually come with full keyboard, accurate pointing device, large screen and powerful CPU/GPU. On the other hand, mobile has limited/virtual keyboard, finger pointing device, small screen (can rotate), less capable CPU/GPU. Therefore, Mobile Web Browser still have a long way to fully satisfy the users' needs.
  • Mobile user: typically on the go in an unpredictable environment, interested in for quick glance-able information, focused on discrete individual tasks, is often distracted.
  • Mobile users have different expectations: immediate access to important information, information augmented by the real world (time, place, etc.). A user’s surroundings may effect expectations.
  • Design for One Web: provide users access to the same information regardless of device. This does not mean you should give them the same presentation on every device.
  • Design for the finger, not the stylus. Fingers are more dexterous than styluses. Typical fingertip size is 40 to 80 pixels. Hit targets need to be appropriately sized to ensure they work well in mobile contexts.
  • Stylus will work fine when the UI is optimized for fingers.
  • Good mobile apparatus focus on a few important tasks. Resist the temptation to make all the features of your main site into the ones that are most critical for mobile.
  • Design pages with less fonts and colors. Most browsers on mobile do not support multiple fonts. Avoid gratuitous graphics and animations.
  • Minimize required input: entering data on a phone can be tiresome and error prone. Only require the minimum amount of information to get the job done. Sensible default values and cookies can also speed up the task of data entry.
  • Use well defined standards to code mobile Web pages. Always specify a DOCTYPE. Avoid things that cause issues: framesets, tables used for layout, nested tables, image maps, reliance on plug-ins or DHTML behaviors.
  • Adapting Content to Mobile. Your options are: do nothing, basic mobile adaptation, multi-serving content, mobile specific design
  • Basic mobile adaptation: META tags for basic mobile adaptation: tell the browser that pages have been laid out specifically for mobile. Viewport controls how your content is placed on a mobile screen. Set by default to 1024 but can be adjusted in META tags.
  • Multi Serving Content: same page, different devices, styled right. Provide a different style sheet for the page. Can check for screen width and then set appropriate styles to the page. Not all browsers support media queries but testing for page width works across more devices.
  • THE DESIGN: Web pages specifically coded for mobile browsers. Can detect user agents. MDPF and WURFL –can be used to detect browser types. Can use Javascript for capability detection. Dom support, CSS positioning, etc.
  • Windows Phone Series 7 has taken IE7 for the phone and added some enhancements from IE8 to it: additional script functions, viewport settings, frameset handling, and navigating to .xhtml files.
These are the requirements of the developers of the Microsoft MIX10 Mobile Web Browser.

Web Browser Features and Risks

It is important to understand the functionality and features of the web browser we use. Do you know that? Enabling some web browser features may lower security. Users often enables features by default to improve the computing experience, but these features may end up increasing the risks to one's computer.
Attackers focus on exploiting one's computer through various vulnerabilities. They use these weakness to take control of your computer, destroy your files, steal your information and uses your computer to attack other's computer. How can an attacker do it? A low-cost way is by exploiting vulnerabilities in web browsers. They can create a malicious website that will install Trojan software or spyware that will steal your information. Rather than actively attacking vulnerable systems, a malicious website can attacks system when the site is visited. A malicious HTML document also can be emailed to victims. Therefore, the act of opening the email and its content can be compromising to our system.
So, lets understand more about what different features will help you to understand how they affect your web browser's functionality and security of your computer.
  • ActiveX is a technology used by IE on Microsoft Windows systems. It allows applications to be utilized by the browser. A website can use ActiveX component that already exists in the system or users may download it. This gives extra functionality to traditional web browser but may also bring in more severe vulnerabilities if it is not implemented properly. ActiveX has been bringing problems with various implementation and vulnerabilities issues. For instace, it can increase the attack surface or the 'attackability'of the system. Vulnerabilities in ActiveX objects may be exploited via the IE, even the object was never designed to be used in a web browser.
  • Plug-ins are applications to be used in the web browser. Plug-ins are similar to ActiveX controls but it could not be executed outside a web browser. Adobe Flash is an example of a plug-in. Netscape firstly introduced the NPAPI standard for developing plug-ins but it was then implemented by other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Mac Safari. Plug-ins may contain design flaws such as cross-domain violations which arise when the same original policy is not followed. Most browsers use security models to prevent scripts in a website from accessing data in a different domain. Vulnerabilities that violate these security models can be used to perform actions that a site could not normally perform.
  • Cookies are files placed on your system to store data for specific websites. It may contain any information about the sites you had visited or may even contained credentials for accessing these websites. Cookies are designed to readable only by the website that created the cookie. Cookies can be used to uniquely identify visitors of a web site which some people considered it as violation of privacy. if a website uses cookie for verification, then an attacked may be able to acquire unauthorized access to that site just by obtaining the cookie.

There are other features and risks of web browsers besides these few stated above. Explore more and get-to-know about them. Hopefully you had a little more extra understanding on the different features and risks that you and your computer can possibly encounter.

Thank You.

8th Week Poll Analysis

Link to us:(http://snipurl.com/uuo3l)

Photobucket

Last week poll question that been asked was "What is the main feature that make you decide to use Mozilla Firefox?"

There are four respondents voted for this question. The highest percentage which contain half of the percentage,50% that respondents voted are fast loading speed. They think that this is the reason they choose fast loading speed as their main feature using Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla Firefox view web pages faster and using less of user computer’s memory too. Besides that, Firefox included the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which giving the browser performs better than previous. Firefox has always been fast, but this is the fastest Firefox ever. It is more than three times as fast as Firefox 3 and 20% faster than Firefox 3.5. What this means are Web applications like email, photo sites, online word processors and more will feel snappier and more responsive. This is why respondents using Mozilla Firefox but not others web browser.

Photobucket
Photo Obtained from:http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/#super-speed

Next is Anti Phishing & Anti-Malware contain 25%. There are too many viruses nowadays in the internet. With anti-phishing & anti-malware feature, user can online shopping and do business safely on the Internet. Firefox gets a fresh update of web forgery sites 48 times in a day, so when user visits a fraudulent site that’s pretending to be a site they trust, a browser message — big as life—will stop the user.
Photobucket
Photo obtained from: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/features/#anti-phishing

Session Restore also get 25% in the results. Session Restore is restart user's browser without losing their web pages after they install an add-on or update the browser. Then, if sometimes user's computer turn off suddenly, user do not need to search back the web pages that they are searching. They do not need to spend more time to recover the web pages. With session restore feature, it will instantly brings back user's windows and tabs, restoring text they entered and any in-progress downloads, and it will updated to make sure user get back to what they were doing even more quickly than before.

There are nobody choose easy communication and password manager as their reason they use Mozilla Firefox. This is because they think that these two features are not the most important features for them to use Mozilla Firefox. They think that password manager feature is dangerous. Others people might using their computer or laptop to online. They might get into their account if the user saved their password in the browser. They might using their account do something evil without their knowledge. This is why they do not choose password manager as their main feature in Mozilla Firefox.

Why Secure Your Web Browser

Most web browsers of these days are such as the Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and more to come are installed on almost all computers. Do you know the importance of securing your web browser? Most people usually do not know that their web browser are equally important to their files that users installed anti-virus protection to protect their computers against harmful viruses and spyware. It is because web browsers are used so frequent therefore, it is important to configure them securely.

Web browsers often comes along with a operating system that is not set up in a secure default configuration. Not securing your web browser can lead quickly to various problems caused by anything from spyware being installed without your knowledge to intruders taking control of your computer.

If possible, computer users should evaluate the risks from the software they installed. Many computers are sold with software whether it is installed by the manufacturers, Internet Service Provider, operating system maker or by a retail store. The first step is to assess the vulnerability of your computer to find out what software are installed and how one program will interact with another. Unfortunately, this step is not practical for most people to perform this level of analysis.

There is an increasing threat from software attacks that take advantage of web browsers that are in a weak position. Researchers found out that there is a trend whereby new software vulnerabilities are exploited and directed at web browsers through the malicious websites. However, this problem is made worse by a number of factor such as:

  • Third-party software may not have the mechanism for receiving security updates.
  • Websites addresses may be camouflaged or taken you to an unexpected site.
  • Many users have the tendency to click on links without considering the risks of their actions after all.
  • Many users do not know how to configure their web browsers securely.
  • Many websites require users to enable certain features or install some software which is meant to put the computer with additional risks.
In conclusion, exploiting vulnerabilities in web browsers has become a popular way for attackers to compromise computer systems. Learn to secure you web browser start from today!

That's all from me, for now.

Do continue to read our post and keep visiting our blog. Thank you for your time!

7th Week Poll Analysis

The question was asked on the previous week. This is the result that we have got from the readers.

Most of the readers choose to use Opera Mobile Web Browser. It stands as much as 66.7% of the total results. The second one is Opera Martini Web Browser. It stands 33.3% of the total results.

For the rest of the choices, they all have a 0% in the result, which means most of the people agree to use Opera's Mobile Web Browser rather than using the others mobile web browsers like, Mozilla Minimo, Safari, and SkyFire.

From the results, we can see that the respondents are more familiar to Opera's Web Browser rather than the Mac Safari, Mozilla Minimo and so on when it comes to Mobile Web Browsers. Therefore, we can say that Opera Martini and Opera Mobile will be the most popular Mobile Web Browsers among all.

More About Opera Mobile Web Browser

(Link to us: http://snipurl.com/unh5r)

Hello everyone!!

Today I would like to tell more about Opera Mobile Web Browser. Its functions, the pros and cons of the web browser.

The Opera Mobile browser and Internet Explorer share some of the same basic features, such as:
1. ability to switch to a full screen mode,
2. a touch and grab feature for touch users,
3. the ability to fit a page to the screen or view the full page.

The Opera Mobile make you feel comfortable using it because you can use it like normal web browser because they have similar functions.

The Pros of the Opera Mobile:
  • allowing you to view the full version for those sites that would normally send you to a mobile version.
  • Coupled with the ability to zoom in and out, this creates a great way of traversing the web.
  • support for opening multiple windows
  • The browser also has back, forward and refresh buttons displayed on the address bar, making navigation easier.
  • turn off images to provide faster web page loading.
The Cons of the Opera Mobile:
  • no favorites button on the main screen. It may be as simple as clicking action and choosing "go to," but I personally wonder why the developer chose to include back, forward and refresh buttons but not favorites button. A favorites button would have made more sense than the refresh button.
  • automatic word fill while typing in a web address is also one of the disadvantages of Opera. This is where the browser tries to complete the word for you. It will be handy when filling up forms, but it is annoying when trying to type in a web address and it auto-fill for you while the address was not the one you wanted.
In Conclusion, although there are disadvantages of Opera which are quite irritating, the functions and advantages of the browser are good and working well. From most of the sites I have visited about Mobile Web Browsers, I can see that most of the comments are positive. This actually prove that Opera is a usable and user-friendly browser.

6th Week Poll Analysis

(Link to us: http://snipurl.com/ukwkx)

(Picture obtained from: http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz220/Brow-Zer/6thWeekPollAnalysis.jpg )

Have you ever thought that Google Chrome will be you next web browser? For me, I never have a single thought that it might be my next browser. Is Google dominating the web technology?! According to the chart above, 67% of the readers might use Chrome as their next browser. This is due to that they are not sure because Chrome has its cons more than their pros. However, Chrome is mainly recognized for its speed.

On the other hand, 33% of the readers agree that Chrome will be their next browser. Why is it so? On the previous post, I had written on ''Why Chrome will be your next browser?''. if you had read the post, you will know that Chrome's market share numbers are sky-rocketing and now, in less than 2 years, Google is testing Google Chrome 4.0 while browser like Firefox is still beta testing version 3.6! When Chrome was firstly introduced, it was almost laughably under-powered compared to any browsers but it was lighting fast.

However, none of the readers disagree that Chrome will be their next browser. This means that they are neutral in deciding whether either to use or might use it. In conclusion, there is no right or wrong in choosing to use or not to use Google Chrome in the future while, it all depends on yourself.

That's all from me, for now. Thank you!

5th week Poll Analysis

Which category of Firefox add-ons is your favorite?
Photobucket
Photo obtained by: http://s829.photobucket.com/albums/zz220/Brow-Zer/?action=view&current=pie.jpg&newest=1

Which category of Firefox add-ons is your favorite? Add-ons? This was the poll question during Chinese New Year (14th February 2010 - 18 February 2010). The results shown that people nowadays less using Firefox Add-ons. There were only three respondents answer the poll. Photo, Music & Videos, Plugins and Privacy & Security consist 33.3 % respectively in this poll question.

People nowadays love entertainment. They choose Photo, Music & Videos as their favorite add-ons because from there, they can know the latest music and videos. Then, they can know the hottest photo from the image sharing site like Photobucket, Flickr, Imageshack and so on. Besides that, they also can download the Keep Tube to download Youtube videos and some radio station to listen to the music.

Another favorite add-on respondents choose is Plugins. Plugins are important to everyone. Plugins help our browser perform specific functions like viewing special graphic formats or playing multimedia files. Plugins are slightly different from extensions, which modify or add to existing functionality. Example for Facebook' Barn Buddy games. Its need Adobe Flash Player to play. So, plugins is really useful to us.

Another add-on is Privacy & Security. Those who using this add-on are privacy aware Internet user and concern about their security online. While we are installing Firefox, the most important steps we can take towards a safe online experience which is install the privacy &security add-on. Firefox had provided a very flexible framework for open-source programmers and commercial vendors to create their own software add-ons for the browser.

Nobody are choosing Personas as their favorite add-ons. This might because they don't really care how is their browser looks like. And sometimes while updating their Firefox, their browser will be blank so they might need to find back their previous personas photo again. It is so annoying.

Other than that, social & communication get 0% in this poll. Nobody choose it. This might because people is can straight go to the social networking site and do not need to install any software to their browser.

In order to access the Internet, one needs special computer software called a Web browser. A web browser is a software application that helps a computer user gain access to all the content that is on the Internet and the hard disk of the computer. It’s that allows a user to display and interact with text, images, videos, music and other information typically located on a Web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network.
(0.01-0.34)
Besides that, more than one web browser can also be installed on a single computer. When the browser is used for browsing web pages, the text and images on a Web page can contain hyperlinks to other Web pages at the same or different website which can be opened in a new browser. Multiple tabs and windows of the same browser can also be opened.
(0.35- 1.05)
Web browsers are an old concept in computers. As time passed, browsers with advanced functionality were developed and updated. The primary and secondary features and facilities offered by web browsers include downloads, bookmarks, and password management. They also offer functions like spell checking, search engine toolbar, tabbed browsing, advertisement filtering, HTML access keys and pop-up blocking.
(1.06-1.41)
There are many types of web browser nowadays such as:
  • Microsoft's Internet Explorer: Most Internet users are using Internet Explorer because it's easy to use and most Web sites are written with Internet Explorer in mind, which mean that they are compatible.

  • Opera: Opera is another popular browser that's easy to use; however, it can have some compatibility issues with various websites.

  • Mozilla's Firefox: Firefox is rapidly gaining ground right behind Internet Explorer because of its tabbed browsing, superior security features, and fast load.

  • Mac Safari: Specifically for Mac users, Safari is an excellent choice for a Web browser, with fast load and good compatibility with most websites out there.

  • Google Chrome: Chrome is an Web browser designed by Google, Inc. It is one of the newer additions in the competitive web browsing market
(1.42-3.01)

Above are the most popular web browser in Internet nowadays. There will be more details on those web browsers soon.

Why Chrome Will Be Your Next Browser

(Link to us: http://snipurl.com/uecac)

Do you agree that Chrome will be your next web browser?

I am sure that people do know what is Google Chrome nowadays. And I guess that it is all because of the different exposures that people get these days. Google's web browser is about to make the leap from upstart to leader of the pack. This is the news or current information spread throughout the Internet. If you is not sure about it, read this post and learn more about it.

Chrome's market share numbers are sky-rocketing. Wow! It has blown past Safari and Opera to become the No. 3 most widely used web browser. That's rather impressive and I think it will make its way up even higher than we expected. Maybe it could overtake Firefox or challenge it, if not beat Internet Explorer sometime between the next 5 years.

After passing Safari just barely two months ago, it had now topped to become the 3rd most widely used web browser which is 5% (according to Net Applications). Within one and a half year, Chrome managed to grow faster and in some ways developing more quickly than Firefox ever did which took Firefox most of this decade to achieve its solid No. 2 status. Over the years, most tech-savvy users said that it has amazing features which is true like the add-ons that we can customize on. Its address bar works better than other address bar because when I start to type in a URL, its best guesses are almost always on target. Firefox has always been faster compared to other competitors.

Firefox have the growing support of average consumers and the critical support os early adopters. However, when Chrome was launched in 2008, it was almost laughably under-powered compared to any of the browsers but it was lighting fast. It let you search right inside from the address bar. With Google's effort, Chrome beta was followed in a short time before a full-blown of first version was introduced. Now, less than 2 years, Google is testing Google Chrome 4.0 while Firefox is still beta testing version 3.6!

As Chrome has risen over these years, people who previously supported Firefox said that it seems to be slower now. If using a web browser is weighing down your system, then it is not good. All browsers uses tabbed browsing which means they have to manage all multiple request of users with each featuring full-blown webpages that features from basic HTML to videos. Although, each tab is a separate process but all of them together can bring your system to a halt. Firefox lumps all tasks into one, but the overall process can get a bit slow at times. What's worse is that it becomes unstable and crashes. IE and Chrome does this too but Chrome just seems to handle the whole thing better than others.

Google has been updating their browser very often and recently, it had added bookmark and now it has a growing list of extensions like Firefox. However, as it grows more popular, Chrome will definitely suffer from someone exploiting it weakness. Microsoft and Mozilla may be glancing confidently in their side-view mirrors right now and pleased that Chrome is just at 5% which is far a distance. They may need to pay closer attention that 'Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.'

Thank You.
